Y'all were hoping for a great post...one you'd be truly thankful for...bad news...this ain't gonna be the one...sorry.

Remember that high school foosball game that got out of hand early - as in starting with the coin flip?  That one where they realized the scoreboard wouldn't go past 99, so they backed off?  If not, catch up here.

Back to the point:  Aledo foosball wasn't always dominant.  Read about program (re)building here.

To say that the once-proud football program in the Parker County town had fallen on hard times understated things. The team had gone through five head coaches in four years, one of whom lasted two days. Only 17 players went out for the varsity team. The locker rooms were rat-infested.

Coaching turnover and facility issues...those certainly can destroy programs!

Happy to report that swimming made it into this month's THSCA magazine.  After discussing shoulder, knee, and neck issues, Dr. Stuart Elkowitz reminds readers of some common-sense tips to ensure safety in the water.  Along with the standard "do not swim alone" and "do not dive in shallow water" was "do not swim when tired"...

Best not let your swimmers read this or they'll be getting out after warm-up...doctor's orders...

Among the items tabled, rejected, etc. at this year's UIL Legislative Council Meeting:

Items to be studied included:

*Adding water polo as a UIL sanctioned activity
*Adding cheerleading as a UIL sanctioned activity
*Adding bowling as a UIL sanctioned activity

...nope, haven't been there...

December 6 is the beginning of the end for Boston University wrestling.  Barring a last-second escape & reversal, this will be their final season.

(via Save BU Wrestling)

Advocates for the wrestling program questioned whether competition and money were the only reasons the team was cut. Some wondered whether the university went out of compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which requires equitable opportunity for men and women in school sports, when it added men’s lacrosse.

However, Erin Buzuvis, a law professor at Western New England University and co-author of the Title IX Blog, said there’s not an obvious role for Title IX here. Adding women’s light weight crew was probably meant to address any compliance risk, Buzuvis said, and even if the university was still striving for proportionality, it would make more sense to add women and cut men, not replace one team with another.

“Either way you slice it, this is not looking like a ‘Title IX killed wrestling’ story,” she said in an email. “It’s just an ‘athletic department preference for another men’s sport killed wrestling’ story.”

So, Erin claims it's not a Title IX issue.  Since she writes the Title IX blog, would you expect anything different?

Erin failed to remind readers that - for decades - the Title IX quota system has wiped out hundreds of wrestling programs, making it tough for the remaining few to survive the athletic department axe.

Time to wrap it up.  Try this one full screen with speakers up:

Addition by Subtraction

(via beRecruited)

The quota crowd won another one - at the expense of women!

Colorado State is dumping women's water polo and adding women's soccer.

If you're asking why, you must new to this site.

It's because they need more numbers on the women's side...but I guess not a whole lot more numbers...or they'd have added soccer and kept polo...

Read more here.

CSU has honored the scholarships to those members of the water polo team that chose not to transfer, even though the scholarships don't count toward Title IX compliance. However, Daley was left out. She said her scholarship offer was tendered verbally days before the program's elimination was announced, and the paperwork was neither signed nor processed in time to extend that benefit to her.

By the time the biology major's academic adviser contacted Graham trying to get CSU to honor Daley's verbal scholarship offer, the water polo squad's accounts already had been closed, and the athletic director said he was powerless to help.

Now Daley, a native of Hawaii, is faced with the likelihood of dropping out of school to work full-time and save up for tuition.

Daley said the odd juxtaposition of a women's sport being eliminated to comply with gender-balance guidelines is telling.

"It definitely shows that they didn't take our sport as seriously as maybe men's basketball or football, because they definitely wouldn't have eliminated them," she said.

First, welcome to our world, Alexzandrea.

Second, don't think they'll treat women's soccer any more seriously than they did polo.

Finally, doesn't look like there's any chance they'll restore the men's swimming program.

It's been a season of firsts:

Utah defeated Arizona in a men's dual.

Rice downed SMU in a women's dual.

Diana Nyad swam from Cuba to Florida.

SwimScam credited a source.*

TCU just added another - their men defeated SMU's for the first time ever, 177.5 to 122.5!

*Just kidding!

Let's see if I got this straight:

Kids in California can choose to "cross over" to a different gender for athletic purposes?

(via The Escapist)

Check out California Assembly Bill 1266 here.  Governor Brown signed it into law back in August.

This bill would require that a pupil be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.

Soooo...if Johnny thinks (s)he's really a Janie, (s)he can suit up for the swim meet in the female locker room and swim in the girl's meet?

Wonder if any of the legislators who sent this garbage to the governor would be okay with their daughters being put in that situation!

Thanks for the heads up, RR!

Excuses, Excuses...

(via Hub Pages)

Reading first comment on this post the other day reminded me of some older posts on excuses.  Here are a few shared by coaches on TOC:

Had one miss yesterday because he got hit in the back with an instrument this weekend at Area Band competition.... He is out for a week.

I had a kid tell me he couldnt practice because he was claustophobic in his helmet, and it made him not able to breathe...

Heard both of these this week:

1. Coach I can't come to practice today, I have mandatory show qhoir tryouts for Beauty and the Beast.

2. Coach I can't go to the game Friday. I have to go visit my dad in prison before they transfer him to South Dakota.

My mom has a date with my uncle and I have to stay home and watch my brother and my cousins.

I have to stay at home because my new step-mom (mail order bride from Russia) went crazy and pulled a gun on my dad because my real mom came home from her year long trip to Amsterdam and she did not know that I had a new mom and they got in a fight. I have to stay home for 2 days so I can visit my mom.

"Coach I can't work out today. My parents told me I have lactic acid in my muscles and it hurts really bad."

Had a kid a few years back that came to me after the morning workout...."Hey coach, I won't be here this afternoon or in the morning for practice. I'm getting married at 1:00 at the courthouse and my mother-in-law has got us a room at the Best Western."

Had a kid once tell me he had to miss because his aunt's cat was having kittens.

I have to take my dog to obedience class

When I was playing, one of my teammates missed a weeks worth of practice because he wiped his butt with poison oak.

Had a kid last year give me a note from his parent that said "Please excuse so and so from football practice today. He is allergic to grass and cannot get in the grass. The Dr. said he can get on grass next week."

Tex Robertson

Ross Lucksinger, grandson of the late Tex Robertson, will do a "meet the author" event in Burnet tomorrow.

Lucksinger recently released Tex:  The Father of Texas Swimming.  Read more here.

“The tales got so tall and the legend so big, part of it was just trying to find out what was the truth,” Lucksinger said. “It turns out, most of it was actually true.”

Robertson is a Burnet County icon. He and his wife established Camp Longhorn on Inks Lakes in 1939 before adding Camp Longhorn Indian Springs, also in Burnet County, in 1975. But it wasn’t just his work at the camp that made Robertson such a legend, it was his entire life.

Born Julian Robertson in 1909, he earned an international reputation as a swimmer with trips to the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and by winning championships as a member of the University of Michigan swim team.
