College Notes

Chase Kalisz is back.  The Georgia athletic department has cleared him to return to competition.  Kalisz sat out three (3) meets while they sorted out possible academic eligibility issues.  Read more here.

News wasn't so good for head coach Jack Bauerle:

When asked a follow up question by Swimming World regarding Bauerle's status, Georgia spokesperson Steve Colquitt responded:

Coach Bauerle's status remains unchanged and this is an ongoing matter.

The Communist News Network (CNN) recently looked into academic issues with NCAA athletes and claims that foosball and thump-thump players are reading at elementary school levels.  Read more here.

Mary Willingham at UNC:

"So what are the classes they are going to take to get a degree here? You cannot come here with a third-, fourth- or fifth-grade education and get a degree here," she told CNN.

NCAA president Mark Emmert responded to the story:

"That CNN story on our athletes only reading at a fifth-grade level was just so they could sell more papers.  They failed to point out the fact that we've seen an increase of nearly one full grade level in the past five years!  How about that?  Sounds like a ninety-something percent improvement to me!  Now, let's talk March Madness, shall we?"

Bobby Burton compiled a list of Strong's rules that will likely result in some roster changes.  His policy on missing classes:

If a player misses a class, he runs until it hurts.  If he misses two classes, his entire position unit runs.  If he misses three, the position coach runs.

Murphy's program lost their diving coach, Jane Figueiredo.  She's London-bound so she can work with Tom Daley & Co.  Read more here.

NCAA Approves Triathlon as Emerging Sport

Women’s triathlon was approved as an emerging sport by the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Legislative Committee, a step toward the sport achieving full varsity status.

Sorry, guys, but you won't be competing in any NCAA triathlon championships.

An emerging sport, a designation only given to women’s athletic programs, gains full varsity status if 40 schools add it within 10 years. Other current women’s sports that have followed that route to varsity status include ice hockey, water polo and rowing.

Adding women’s triathlon would create as many as 10 spots for female athletes at each college that fields a team. The addition would help schools meet Title IX standards requiring women to be offered the same opportunities as men. It also could have a far-reaching effect on the sport in the U.S., college coaches, USA Triathlon officials and triathletes have said.

FINA Defines Hand Separation

Wondering what constitutes separation of hands in breast and fly?  Don't worry, here comes FINA to the rescue!

Here's what Dan McAllen shared with us today via email:

The FINA Technical Committee met in Bangkok, Thailand on December 6-7, 2013. At the meeting there was a discussion of the term “separated hands” as it relates to the rule adopted by FINA at its August, 2013 Congress.

The discussion resulted in the following interpretation:
“Separated means that the hands cannot be stacked one on top of the other. It is not necessary to see space between the hands. Incidental contact at the fingers is not a concern”

Accordingly, the separated hands in breaststroke and butterfly interpretation issued by me on October 8, 2013 is hereby expressly revoked and is replaced by the FINA interpretation above. A picture of the legal and illegal separated hands position as defined by FINA can be found on the Rules & Regulations page of the USA Swimming website as an attachment to this memo. A Conversation with Simone Manuel

The Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool was not too long ago. How has it felt entering the New Year with such an amazing international win under your belt?

Simone: “It was such an exciting meet. I did not swim for my high school so it was pretty cool being in a duel meet like that. I feel like it gave me a feel of what it will be like going into college and competing. So overall after that meet I am just really excited for the year to come.”

In a new article on Inside Higher Ed, we're reminded that Temple's football program - like a huge majority - loses a ton of money.  Read more here.

In “a real base accounting sense,” it’s true that universities like Temple lose money on football, Maxcy said. But what they gain in exposure, advertising, donations and recruiting likely makes up for it.

Still, schools with programs bleeding millions in red ink refer to their foosball teams as "revenue" sports.

This relates to a concept called the illusory truth effect – the idea that telling the truth can actually lead to a false memory. A man who repeatedly denies seeing a knife at a crime scene, for example, might actually begin to believe he saw it even if it was never there. It feels familiar to him, and because the repeated denials have slipped from his memory, he ends up thinking it must have happened.
