How do we get 24 to high school state?

VS.

The California Interscholastic Federation will hold their first state championship in Clovis next year.  Read more here.

Early plans are for the meet to include 32 entrants in each event, with each of CIF's 10 sections getting a specific amount of guaranteed spots in each event.

Don't you wish TISCA had been pushing the UIL - seriously pushing - to get twenty-four (24) to Austin these past few years?

Such a shame that we only take sixteen (16) per event, leaving All-Americans at home.

The edge California athletes will gain over our kids will be tremendous.  More of their top swimmers will advance to their state meet without having to rest/shave to qualify.

With our new alignments (6A & 5A) and only eight (8) call-up slots available in each, many of our top kids will have to rest/shave for region - maybe even district!

Résumé Fail?

How many of you coaches out there are generals?  Doctors?

Right, we have a few PhD's.

Okay, how many of y'all are medical doctors?

Wouldn't y'all be super duper impressed if the coach of your high school team were both a general and a medical doctor?  Quite a coincidence that he'd be coaching at Health Careers HS, wouldn't it?

Warnin' Device fer Code Yellers (& Browns)

The Aggies have come up with a device to detect weewee and doodoo in pools.  Read more here.

Urobilin molecules are small and diffuse quickly so they easily occupy large volumes, such as lakes and reservoirs, for example.

When mixed with zinc ions, urobilin forms a phosphorescent compound which glows green under an ultraviolet light.

In some samples, low concentrations of urobilin cause the glow to become weak.

To tackle this, the researchers used a hollow cylinder called an integrated cavity.

Water is placed inside the cylinder where it interacts with zinc ions, and a laser light is beamed into the object and onto the sample through a small hole.

The light reacts with the urobilin compound in the sample, causing it to emit a glow even at low concentrations.

The detection results appear almost instantaneously.

Wisconsin-River Falls

The Falcon swim programs (M&W) have been suspended and may be headed toward extinction.  Read more here.  Thanks for the heads up, BG!

Sports cuts are nothing new at UWRF:

The last time the UWRF Athletics Department sport module was changed was in the 2002-03 school year. That year the wrestling, baseball and women's gymnastics teams were suspended while the sports of men's indoor and outdoor track & field and women's golf were added.

Trading men's wrestling and baseball for track helped the Falcons to a net loss of male athletes.  Swapping gymnastics for golf on the ladies' side probably helped them maintain those numbers.

Thanks, Title IX Quota System!

While the 2003 cuts were mostly on the men's side (to satisfy Title IX lawyers), the latest sports dumps don't appear to be aimed at compliance.  Eliminating swimming will mean sixteen (16) men and seventeen (17) women will get the lead handshake.

Meanwhile, UWRF's "revenue" sport - foosball - will try to rebound from last season's 0-10 debacle.  Sure would be interesting to see how many buckets of red ink that program bleeds on an annual basis.

You can bet the foosball program's ninety-five (95) players and sixteen (16) coaches will cost the university many times what the swimming teams would.

p.s.  The new Falcon Center groundbreaking ceremony is set for tomorrow.  Nope, it won't include a pool.
