Just got a link to an old article on CBSSports by Dennis Dodd. Read his take on Title IX and college athletics here. Too bad more folks didn't follow his advice back in 2002.

Here's how he starts it off:

Football needs to start making Title IX sacrifices.

Title IX has been a mess since the day it was born.

Hold onto your political correctness -- this is not a condemnation of equal opportunity. This is a well-rationalized 30-year view of the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education.

The easy way out is still to ax a couple of men's minor sports. They don't produce money anyway. Taken to its extreme, then, Title IX compliance should mean cutting virtually all the minor sports. Athletic departments could succeed sponsoring only football and men's and women's basketball. Throw in a couple of rowing teams, some equestrian, and it's all equal Title IX-wise.

There is a solution, or progress toward a solution. It will require some hard swallowing, but here goes:

Cut 20 football scholarships and two assistant coaches across the board in I-A. Redistribute the money to minor sports overall and women's opportunities in particular.

Another true story: A couple of years ago, a former Oklahoma male swimmer confronted a Big 12 athletic director from another school at the conference's basketball tournament. The AD had cut men's swimming to save a sinking athletic department. The swimmer had seen enough slashing from his sport.

It has all become too much. The wrestling coaches' suit has opened up a rattlesnake's den of controversy. Women's groups are defending their turf. Men's minor sports are defending their programs.

Football is sitting there, fat and on its throne like Jabba the Hutt. To the satisfaction of all parties, might we recommend a quick weight-loss program?

I am borred over the weekend and decide to look over District results and what to do I see....only half of the district results posted? Please help me understand why some results are out their for everyone to see, while others get to hide theirs and not post?

I think we've been down this road before. Some district results are submitted by the meet director and posted, making them available to those scouting. Others are held back and remain hidden until they're sent to TISCA after the region meet.

There's no UIL rule stating that district results must be posted online, is there?

Doing the same thing over and over - and expecting a different outcome, right?

College athletic directors continue to drop men's swimming, but they usually leave women's programs intact.

They claim to be doing women a favor, but we know this hasn't been a reality. If dropping men's teams were helping the women, shouldn't we see more women-only programs dominating at NCAA's?

Are the best women-only programs good because they don't have to share pool time with the men?

Did the Miami Her-icannes springboard to the top when the men got dumped? How many titles have the Nebraska women won since Byrne cut their men? Are the Rutgers women better off since the guys were shown the door?

I'm not trying to pick on women-only swim teams - if it had been up to them, men's programs would not have been discontinued.

I ask because one of the more idiotic reasons A.D.'s often give for axing men's programs is that doing so will strengthen women's programs.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

Last year, it was the Kutztown women trying to make this very point. This year, it's the Duquesne gals who are saying the same thing. Read more here.

"Unlike what Greg Amodio said about this being beneficial to all the other teams left over, this is devastating to the women because we are not two teams, we are one team," said Skyes, in reacting to plans for the men's swim team to be axed. "We train together, we travel together, compete together, and we are family. It's like cutting half of our team, not just one team."

“I had an idea that I could be good enough to get a scholarship,” Cragin said. “But that’s not why I stuck to swimming. I don’t think anyone should play a sport just to get a scholarship.”

Title IX stupidity rising to some new lows

Duquesne waited several days before finally explaining why four men's teams were dropped. On the athletic department's web site, the reasons for the move are listed: Financial impact, facilities limitations, gender equity, Atlantic 10 Conference support/affiliation, global warming, nuclear proliferation and Hurricane Katrina.

OK, I made those last three up, but whatever came after or before "gender equity" was unimportant.

Duquesne flunked handling of athletic cuts

Some swim team parents are trying to raise enough money to sustain the men's team themselves, but Amodio indicated earlier this week that facilities are a major obstacle.

"If you take a look at the [eliminated] sports -- and we looked at the financial impact of all of them -- but baseball is played at an off-campus facility, golf is off-campus, wrestling is on campus but at a facility the university is considering what to do with, and in swimming we do not have a diving well," Amodio said. "As well as our swimmers have performed, that's a facility limitation that we're not going to be able to change."

His failed attempts to touch base with USA Swimming execs has him frustrated. I hope he's able to get through and be heard.

A few years ago, I needed help and had no idea who to contact. I decided to dial up Jonty Skinner's number in the hopes that a receptionist/secretary would direct me to someone who could help me out.

To my surprise, Mr. :49.44 (100m free WR, 1976) answered the phone! After a brief conversation, it was clear that Coach Skinner was not only going to point me in the right direction, but he was also going to remain involved and follow through.

Jonty's moved on. Our loss is British Swimming's gain...
