Wayland Baptist Dumps Swim Programs

After four years as a competitive sport, the swimming and diving program at Wayland Baptist University has been discontinued.
"After much examination and deliberation with athletic and university administration, we are making the difficult decision to immediately discontinue our swimming and diving program," WBU Athletics Director Rick Cooper said. "This has been a very difficult decision, but one we believe is both necessary and best at this point in time."
The move comes on the heels of the resignation about a week earlier of swimming and diving coach Alyson Hannan, who is taking a position with the YMCA in Colorado Springs. Hannan had served as coach of the program since its inception for the 2013-14 academic year. Hannan's husband, James, served as an assistant coach for the Pioneers the past two years. He resigned several weeks ago for a position in computer software sales.
Cooper said the reasons behind discontinuing swimming and diving were varied, but the most influential was the lack of an on-campus practice or competition pool/facility with no short- or long-term solution to alleviate that situation.
The Pioneers trained at the Plainview YMCA, and the closest regulation pool for competition is the Pete Ragus Aquatics Center in Lubbock, where the Pioneers hosted only one of their 11 regular-season competitions this past season.
"We want to thank the Plainview YMCA for its willingness and cooperation in allowing us to use their facility. Certainly their help was a great benefit," Cooper said.
"The Y did a terrific job working with us to schedule practices, but we were unable to host any local competitions."
Wayland was one of 25 men's programs and 29 women's programs within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to sponsor swimming and diving. The closest NAIA school to Wayland to host a program was St. Gregory's University in Shawnee, Okla., although SGU discontinued swimming and diving earlier this year.
The Pioneer men finished in sixth place at the last two NAIA national competitions. The WBU women, after placing 10th a year ago, were ranked sixth this season but finished 19th after a roster reduction just prior to nationals.
About her resignation, Hannan said it was an opportunity she couldn't pass up, both for career advancement and because the move gets her and James closer to family.
Hannan developed seven all-Americans (top three finishers at nationals) at Wayland and was named American Swimming Coaches Association Coach of Excellence three times.
"I'm very thankful for my time at Wayland and for everyone who took a chance on me and the program," Hannan said.
WBU's swimming and diving program ended last season with 28 student-athletes. Cooper has informed those student-athletes that the university is honoring athletic scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year for those who want to continue their studies at WBU. Cooper added that the university will grant full releases to any affected student-athletes who wish to transfer and pursue other collegiate athletic opportunities.

TCU's Sybesma Retires
Long-time Frog coach Richard Sybesma has announced his retirement.
"I have reached a point in my life where I need to put myself, family and health first," Sybesma said. "With that being said, I have come to a decision to retire.
"I've had an incredible 38 years at TCU and couldn't imagine a better place to spend my career and raise my family. It's been an incredible journey. TCU, this program and all the student-athletes I've come in contact with hold a special place in my heart. I will always bleed purple and support this program."

Pulled up hike journal and here's what I posted two years ago today. We were in New Jersey:
Day 113 - 5/30
On trail by 6:30. Another hot and humid day. We surprised a large bear and were glad he took off into the woods. Stopped at High Point State Park HQ. Signing in got us some trail magic and I was able to buy some postcards. They were kind enough to remind us that hitchhiking is illegal in New Jersey, then we went out and got a hitch into Port Jervis. Couldn't get pics off camera on Days Inn computer, so that will have to wait until I can get onto a better computer.
Getting rides in PA & NJ was pretty tough, but there were a handful of folks who'd pick up scruffy lookin' stinky guys now and then.
Guy that picked us up that day said "Everybody thinks guys from New Jersey are rude, but we're just honest. The place I'm taking you has a shower and laundry."

A few - and I hope it's just a few - deal with parent meddling.
Basketball's Meddling Parent of the Year award goes to LaVar Ball.
In March, Chino Hills athletic director Jeff Schuld said that the school would side with Gilling over Ball despite Ball's public claims that Gilling would be replaced. Gilling, though, would be fired four weeks later.
Chino Hills will now look for its third head basketball coach in three seasons.

Former head coach (1980-2002) Mike Stromberg is speaking out about the dumping of his UND swim program.
For many years, our swim lesson program—run by UND swimming and diving—made more money for the athletic department than the football program.
It seems strange to choose to close a door on one of the most successful athletic programs in the history of UND. The exemplary student athletes charged the UND flag to the national level in swimming, diving and desire—that is, until that door abruptly was closed.

UND is under investigation by the Office of Civil Rights for alleged Title IX violations.
The investigation was officially launched on April 14—a little more than two weeks after UND announced that it was cutting its women's hockey and men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
UND made the cuts as part of a campus-wide financial restructuring in anticipation of a dip in state funds.
Kennedy asked the athletic department to cut $1.3 million out of its annual budget. The budgets of women's hockey and men's and women's swimming and diving total roughly $2.9 million, but some of the money and scholarships from those sports will be reallocated into other sports.

USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus has passed after a battle with cancer. More here
During Wielgus’ tenure, there were 156 podium performances by the U.S. Olympic Swim Team in five Olympic Games, including 33 medals (16 gold) at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The medal count has equated to approximately 33 percent of the total Team USA count.

In his 24 years at the national governing body, Unger has served as Chief Operating Officer, Assistant Executive Director, National Events Director, Marketing Director and National Team Coordinator.

Finally, 54-year old Glen Bruemmer died during the swim portion of yesterday's Ironman in The Woodlands. More here
McAfee said multiple people tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Bruemmer.
Organizer Scott Langen said the event continued for the many others who had trained and prepared for months, but said a dark cloud remained over the celebrations at the finish line.
"As far as the family, our hearts go out to them, and immediately when an incident like that occurs, our shift in focus goes to that family," Langen said.
Bruemmer's cause of death has not yet been released.
