Region Meets, Part II

Last year's post-region meet posted post is here

Let's kick off this year's post-region posting with links to 5A & 6A Unofficial state meet call-ups.  These are pre-scratch and unofficial.  If you spot errors/omissions, please get those to me ASAP.

Okay, now for the fun stuff.

Time to share "irregularities" that we experienced at our region meets.

Please, allow me to go first:

via Pinterest
1. Scoreboard flickered a few times, then "died" early in prelims.  During that time Meet Mobile wasn't active, so fans were more than a little unhappy.

2. Remember that new rule about marking sides of pools for 15m?  Well...traffic cones...

3. Swimmer patiently paying attention to coach in love with sound of own voice.  Meanwhile, 30 yards away, event is on the blocks...but missing just one kid.  You guessed it, motor-mouth's kid is now a no-show.  Meet referee was kind enough to make it a "delay of meet" DQ.  Could have easily been out rest of meet for NS.

4. Meet director told of late scratch in medley relay, which created open lane in championship finals.  Went ahead and swam consols as originally seeded.  Put 17th place team in championship final open lane.  Compounded error by allowing consolation winners to move up to 8th place and score additional four points.  Went to meet committee and they backed meet director.  Rule book clearly states consolation finalists can score no higher than 9th place (a.k.a. The Death Seat) points.  My rule book is now in a dumpster somewhere out back of the facility...

5. Coaches shocked when they receive email showing a six-hour+ timeline for finals.  Must have forgotten diving was the night before.

6. Official setting out lap counters for finals.  Pauses to turn each one to "red" before placing neatly on bulkhead.  Apparently it was opposite day.

7. About that scoreboard...reanimated late in finals session...

Your turn:

Hi and thank you so much for all your hard work! Just out of curiosity, can call-ups come from b-final? UIL manual does not specify and I've heard differing interpretations.

Ok, just saw the comments under the draft 6A post about this. Thanks!

allowing call-ups from consols wouldn't be wise. could give unfair advantage to kids who'd bag prelims and then blast a call-up time in consols the next day.

  4. Thanks for taking over this year Button. Hopefully it wasn't too stressful. If I remember the rules correctly, it doesn't say you can't be called up from the Consolation final, but it does say that call-ups can only come from the Championship final.

How about handing out ballots for the COTM at regionals (they were in the team's envelope given out bef prelims) even if the coaches were not memebers of TISCA. When questioned, statement was made that if the ballots were from a non-TISCA coach, they would be thrown out. The question is, how would the referee know if a coach was indeed a member of TISCA.

Club coaches, from the club that that uses the facility were actively on deck during the meet, in their club shirts, talking to their club swimmmers, in the area that was reserved for officials and HS coaches.

Official UIL callups are now posted on UIL website.

  8. Region VII 5A meet packet specifically states concessions will be available for all sessions. Don Cook had NO concessions the entire prelims meet and swimmers/parents were waiting in long lines to get drinks out of a vending machine, which can only hold so much water until it ran out. Don’t host a region meet if you can’t accommodate adequate services for swimmers/spectators. The scoreboard not working was a MAJOR problem though!

Don Cook was horrible. No concessions, dark, water murky. Kids couldn't see markers on bottom of the pool to time turns, relay exchanges, etc. Scoreboard not working for most of the meet, timing pads flipped up when some kids turned or touched to finish.

Why was Region VII 5A there? What was wrong with the pool we had been at the last few years?

Monday morning quarterbacking won't do anything about the problems with meets run poorly in lousy facilities. UIL doesn't give a damn about swimming and won't bother to address our issues. Money will keep rolling in and that's all they care about.

Problems at Don Cook Nasty-torium? First time that's ever happened, I'm sure!

Anybody notice that the UIL changed their call up list at the 6A level after they posted the call ups for the boys 400 Free Relay?
