High School News
This year's Theron Pickle Scholarship winners are Casey Clark (Klein) and Jonathan Edwards (Cy-Creek).Clark took silver in both the 200 free and 100 fly at this year's state meet. Clark will continue her career with Seth Huston's Rice Owls.
Edwards wrapped up his high school career with a spectacular state meet. The Stanford-bound I.M.-er left Austin with four wins: 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 back, and 400 free relay. He was recently named the All-Greater Houston male swimmer of the year by the Houston Chronicle.
Girl swimmer of the year for the Houston area was sprinter Maddie Locus (Dulles). Read more here.
Minutes from the spring TISCA board meeting are here.
Yesterday, by a vote of 22-7, the state senate passed SB1214. The bill would allow private schools* to participate in UIL competitions. Only football and basketball are exempted in the bill. Details of the bill are here. Read more here.
Proponents of the senate bill excluded football and basketball to eliminate worries that private schools would be recruiting athletes for those two high-profile sports.
Of course, it's okay if "low-profile" sports like swimming don't get the same consideration...
*Houston Strake Jesuit and Dallas Jesuit already participate in UIL contests. Stanford's Matt Thompson (Dallas Jesuit/'09) holds 5A state records in the 200 i.m. (1:45.27) and 100 back (:47.37).
